Opis książki:

What is the meaning of the word "democracy" How can it be separated from its mythological and stereotypical connotations Can it exist in harmony with state socialism, or are the two polar opposites Without having any historical experience to aid them, where should Poles, Russians, Ukrainians or Hungarians turn of advice on how to implement a democratic system With the collapse of the Soviet Union and the subsequent new political conditions in Eastern and Central Europe that have existed since 1989, these questions are of vital interest. Lesson in democracy is based upon a conference held at the Jagiellonian University in Cracow, Poland in 1997, which brought together some of the words leading political scientists to address these and other related topics. Lessons in democracy focuses upon the following: the relationship between democracy, nationalism and ethnic relations; the application of rational choice theory to democratic politics; the historical roots of the democratizing movements in the Eastern bloc; the connections between liberation of work and productivity; the economic aspects of Eastern and Central Europes transition to democracy; the problem of dealing with the communist past; and the importance of building democratic institutions on a countrys own traditions.
