The articles explore the ways in which communities are culturally constructed by people who perceive themselves to be part of a given community and the ways in which these cultural constructions find their representations in British and American literature and culture. The essays cover a wide variety of topics, from, among others, the story of Libertaria, a pirate utopian commonwealth in Madagascar; the role of The English Woman’s Journal in making of a feminist community of women in 19th. century England; nomad communities in 20th. century British drama; through the analysis of the concept of the nation in the 1855 preface to Leaves of Grass: the tragedy of the Carlisle Indian Industrial school; the community of Vietnam Veterans in Maxine Hong Kingston’s The Fifth Book of Peace; and a study of Gilded Age Social Utopias; to texts that focus on the concept of community and nearness in Eric Vogelin’s thought; and discuss the concept of nearness regained in allegorical spaces of contemporary American poetry. The work is addressed to researchers, students and all readers interested in British and American literature and culture.
