Opis książki:

The aim of the study is to examine the ways in which George Eliot represents marriage and women`s social roles in order to increase our understanding of Eliot`s position in relation to the dominant ideology of womanhood and her attitude towards feminism, since her beginnings as a novelist coincide with the beginnings of modern feminism. The work is divided into four chapters. To place Eliot`s representation of her heroines` attitude to marriage in a broader context, her views on the Woman Question put forward in her essays and reviews are delineated in Chapter One. Chapter Two examines the female characters who seek to escape from traditional womanhood, while Chapter Three focuses on the heroines who-motivated by self-gratification-exploit traditional female roles. Chapter Four discusses the plight of women who abuse matrimonial pieties out of misconceived or misplaced idealism. The narrative treatment her heroines receive is shaped by George Eliot`s allegiance to the view that traditional female virtues contribute to the betterment of society. Such qualities as affection and sympathy, maternal emotions, tenderness, self-abnegation an willingness to serve others become a source of her heroines` strength. George Eliot`s feminism, ambivalent as it might be, may be found in her recognition of the validity of female experience and in her valorization of values traditionally associated with femininity.
