Podejmuje próbę ogarnięcia fenomenu miłości w kategoriach filozoficznych i symbolach kulturowych. Czyniąc przedmiotem swoich rozważań ideę miłości, proponuje nowy rodzaj oglądu historii kultury europejskiej i najtrudniejszej do przybliżenia sfery prywatności oraz intymności. Tytuł rozprawy należy odnotować z uwagą, gdyż autor sta-wia po raz pierwszy w nauce polskiej tak gruntownie, traktowaną zazwyczaj jako wielce dyskusyjną, kwestię relacji między historią i antropologią.

Love in the West. An Anthropological History

This work concentrates on the phenomenon of love understood as an element of culture. The author is not interested in all the models of love that exist in society such as maternal love, paternal love, fraternal love, sisterly love or love of country. He focuses his attention on love between two people, on passionate love, erotic love but also on that of a religious nature. The main subject of this research is the symbolic universe of love in the Western culture, an attempt to grasp the phenomenon of love in the categories of certain ideas as well as to analyse this feeling in the manner in which political doctrines, artistic styles or schools of philosophy are analysed. Writing about love calls for discussing the forms of love that are embodied in public symbols. They are enclosed in the language, image, gesture and even in objects used. The author searches for those objects in hagiographies, soap operas, in the behaviour of the Middle Ages mystics and, last but not least, in the crowds of participants of Love Parade.
